In a game that saw the teams exchanging scoring streaks, it was Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/Rufus King)'s personal streak of six points in the last half minute that spelled the difference in UW-Whitewater's 70-66 win in Williams Fieldhouse in Platteville Wednesday night. The victory put Whitewater in first place, one game ahead of three other teams with three games remaining in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season.
Box Score
Platteville's only lead in the first half was 4-2. Whitewater closed the half with a 13-4 run to go in to intermission with a 38-28 lead.
The Pioneers flipped a switch and opened the second half outscoring UW-W 17-4 to take a 45-42 lead on a layup by sophomore guard Josh Langenfeld at 11:47. Dustin Mitchell (Lac de Flambeau/Lakeland)'s layup put the Warhawks back in front 50-48 at 7:30, part of a 13-2 run that ran Whitewater's margin to 11, 61-50 with 3:50 left in the game. Platteville responded with its own 13-3 streak to narrow the margin to just one, 64-63 with 25 seconds left.
Warhawk junior guard Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) took over the game from that point. He hit two free throws with 24 seconds left, 66-63 Whitewater. Platteville went to the line with 18 seconds left, but missed both attempts. Goodwin was fouled again at the 15 second mark, and again hit both attempts to put UW-W up 68-63. Platteville turned the ball over on its next possession and Goodwin made his sxith consecutive point with a layup. Platteville hit a three-pointer as the clock ran out for the final margin.
Goodwin scored 32 points, following up his 33 point effort in a win over Stout Saturday, to lead all scorers. Goodwin was 4-8 from beyond the arc and 6-6 from the line. Junior forward Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) was the only other Warhawk in double figures, scoring all ten of his points in the first half. Senior forward Billy Kolinske (Big Bend/Waukesha Memorial) led UW-W with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Langenfeld led UW-P with 20 points, with fellow sophomore backcourt mate Curt Hanson adding 17 and junior center Jeff Skemp 13. Skemp also pulled down a game high ten rebounds.
First place will be on the line again Saturday, when UW-W travels to UW-Stevens Point, 18-4 overall and 10-3 in the WIAC. The Pioneers and Pointers are part of a logjam behind the Warhawks, with UW-Oshkosh also 10-3 with three games remaining in regular season play.
